The “Show” – Springdell Mid-Season Pickup #2

Today was our second pickup of the weekly interim share box that will carry us through to the beginning of our Springdell 2015 Summer CSA!  This week we will be working with:

  • 1 bag of spinach
  • 1 bag of mixed greens (Sarah got 2 bags of spinach and no mixed greens)
  • Tomatoes
  • Purple skinned potatoes
  • Asparagus
  • Fiddleheads
  • 1 bag of mushrooms (Sarah only)

It is a similar pickup to last week, as ’tis the season, but we have much more we can do with these items!  Jess is also planning to pick up her chicken from tomorrow’s poultry harvest, so that’ll be fun to add to the mix!  Quick tip for storing your asparagus:  wrap the ends of the asparagus in a damp paper towel and put them in a bag in the fridge.  You will get them to last a day or two more this way!

Speaking of tomorrow, it’s the annual sheep shearing at Springdell!  This event is a really great time for all ages.  We plan on attending and bringing a picnic lunch to eat out on the hill.  The boys are looking forward to the pony rides and visiting all of the animals.  There will be a few of our vendor friends there with samples, some old tractors to check out, and of course the farm stand will be open too!  We do hope you will join the fun, remember this is YOUR farm too.  Hope to see you all there!

I have shared with you shared with you a little about my new gardening adventures with my raised beds.  Yesterday I stopped in at Springdell to pick up the plants I had ordered.  I am so excited to say that I have put in 4 tomato plants, 2 different kinds of peppers, lots of cucumbers and some zucchini!  Springdell started the plants, all I had to do was pick them up and get them in the ground.  I hope to have a nice little mini harvest here in my yard.  Thanks Springdell!
